Beartooth Announces Fourth Record With Two New Tracks - “Devastation” and “The Past is Dead" Review

Written by Nick Garrastegui

Beartooth is back! The band has just released the first two singles off of their new album “Below” entitled “Devastation” and “The Past is Dead.”

This band has been around for a while now; lead vocalist and songwriter Caleb Shomo formed the band in 2012 after his departure from Attack Attack!, and they've been reaching new heights ever since. Three years after their most recent release, 2018's "Disease", they have continued to evolve, led by Shomo; he has taken full creative control over their newest record and has gone beyond his normal writing duties to include post-production as well.

“Devastation” was released as a stand-alone single on March 19th. Its sound is reminiscent of Beartooth’s first album “Disgusting.”

The song keeps the hard hitting drums and raucous guitars Beartooth is known for while also including memorable and catchy choruses. The song is one of the band's heaviest to date, with blast beats and an absolutely crushing breakdown featuring Shomo screaming "devastation will reign."

"The Past is Dead" was released on March 26th as part of the album announcement. This track has more of the modern Beartooth sound we heard on "Disease."

It opens with a "woah-oh" vocal melody set over a punchy snare intro before the rest of the instruments kick in. The chorus is anthemic, and you can almost picture it being performed at packed stadiums.

The singles released so far are fitting to usher in this new era of Beartooth. The sound is updated yet familiar and is enough to both gain new fans while retaining their old ones.

The contrast in sound between the two singles shows the versatility of Shomo's songwriting. It's safe to say that Beartooth is still at the top of their game!

Both singles are available to stream everywhere you listen to music, and you can support the band by picking up some merch for the new album, including pre-orders on CD and multiple colored vinyl variants.
