Beach Bunny Confronts the Toxic “Blame Game” With EP Release- Review

Written by Emily Lutz

On January 15th, 2021, Chicago's Beach Bunny released an immersive four-track EP. Throughout all four songs, singer Lili Trifilio challenges the harsh reality of toxic relationships in a way that’s motivating for anyone who has been in that position.

Each second of this release proves there is an opening for growth amidst all the negatives that come with relationships. The first track on the EP is “Good Girls (Don’t Get Used)”, the only one to be put out before the full release, and it the perfect baseline for what was to come.

I could not think of a better intro to this extended play, as it introduces the theme of rejecting toxicity which serves as a through-line for the rest of the EP. This track kicks off the whole release with an upbeat, confrontational, and “in your face” sound.

Next up is “Love Sick”, which takes listeners through the ups and downs of a relationship, wanting something good but, at the same time, not wanting to worry about getting hurt again. The lyrics “Need someone that isn’t an equation / Only adding up to pain” and “I’m getting tired of breaking and healing / I’m getting sick of patching myself up / But you’ve got me full and up to the ceiling” express it perfectly.

The third track on the EP is “Nice Guys”, with lyricism that gets in the face of men who believe sex is “earned” by doing the bare minimum. Trifilio rebukes them by knowing her own worth, exemplified in the lines, “I want someone who actually wears hearts inside their eyes / And isn't only interested in what’s between my thighs / You win me like a trophy / Not a consolation prize.”

The title track closes out the EP on a bleak yet inspiring note, covering the dangers of being a woman and why it is important to face those fears and keep on living. The song picks up into a protest that lights a fire in you, especially with the lyrics, “I’ll be caught dead saying / Guess it’s my fault my body’s fun to stare at / Sorry my clothes can’t keep your hands from grabbin’ / Yeah it’s my problem, I’m 'asking for it' / Guess you’re the victim and I’m the suspect.”

“Blame Game” is available now on all streaming platforms, and you can support Beach Bunny by picking up some merch or simply giving them a follow on Twitter @BeachBunnyMusic. Let us know your thoughts on the EP by tweeting us @lgndsoftmrw!
