As It Is Explore A Heavier Sound With “I Lie To Me”- Review

Written by Hannah Clough

The timing couldn’t be more perfect, alternative-rock three piece As It Is’ most recent album "The Great Depression" just hit its third anniversary so new music was in order. While another full-length album hasn’t been announced, the two singles that have been released so far bring in hope that something big is coming.

After dropping two members from their lineup, the group proves they’re stronger than ever with “I Lie To Me”. In classic As It Is fashion, it resolves around a constant internal struggle with mental health.

This track feels like a bridge between the previous release “The Great Depression” and whatever is next for the group music-wise. Diving below the surface of this new single, you can hear an all too familiar story unfolding.

Whether or not the battle against internal demons is won is up to interpretation, but the important takeaway is to not be too hard on yourself.

It’s safe to say As It Is are some of the biggest mental health advocates in the scene, they have a way of pulling off every struggle sonically and overall creating these pieces that leave anyone who listens emotionally vulnerable. With live music slowly making its return, it’s easy to imagine a room full of people singing along to this song as a form of expression.

If you want to hear singles “IDGAF” and “I Lie To Me”, As It Is will be attending Slam Dunk this year, being from the U.S I’m not sure when we’ll get to welcome them back, but we can only hope it’ll be soon.
