An Interview With Trevor Hedges of Sundressed

Interview by Lyric Beyerl

Phoenix, Arizona-based band Sundressed began as a fun music project among a group of friends as well as a way to stay sober for singer-songwriter Trevor Hedges. Years later, the group's lineup has changed a bit, but the message has stayed the same. I was able to talk with frontman Trevor about the band’s newest album titled, "Home Remedy", in addition to their future as a band.

First, things first, please introduce yourself to those who don’t know Sundressed.

My name is Trevor Hedges and I sing in Sundressed from Phoenix, AZ. We are an emo-ish sorta band and we strive to build a positive community through our songs.

So, with your new album, "Home Remedy", where does the title come from?

Home Remedy comes from the idea of so many people being forced to self-diagnose and self-treat symptoms by ways of the internet which in turn can lead to more anxiety. The idea of the album was to kind of encourage people to find those remedies that work for them and make life a little less bleak.

Being a photographer I couldn’t help but love the cover of the album, but where does that image come from?

When we were thinking of imagery surrounding the words “Home Remedy”, I kept going back to the medicine cabinet because I felt like it was an accurate visual representation. We actually had a bunch of friends send photos of their bathrooms before we found the one we liked!

What would you say your favorite song to record off the album was? Is there any particular reason why?

I’d have to say "Cash Out." I really love the album and I am just so proud of how it came out!

Is there anything that really inspired this record? Any song that comes to mind that you’d be willing to share?

"Sensitive Motherfucker" was a song that almost didn't make the album. It was a little scary to record because it’s about me personally being a very sensitive kid growing up who was often made fun of for not being "manly", which I now know as toxic masculinity. I wanted to give it sort of a tongue in cheek/ironic spin on the song because it is just so ridiculous to view manhood that way. I definitely worried that it might make some people mad, but I think it's an important message. As far as inspiration for the album, it really was centered in the idea of the fact that our current generation is struggling with so many things even as basic as being able to go to the doctor when you’re sick, and being able to pay your bills, as well as how its become difficult to be a "sensitive" person or have mental health concerns, as the stigma is still very much a thing.

It's been a while since releasing "A Little Less Put Together"; what do you think was the biggest change from this record to the last?

Definitely the addition of AJ Peacox on guitars and Vic on drums. It made for a very collaborative process which wasn’t as present in previous records which I think gave us more of a unique sound!

With COVID-19 still going on and events canceled for the foreseeable future, how have you all been coping? And how excited are you to get back to playing shows?

It's been very difficult for me personally. I never realized how much I relied on the energy exchange given in a live music setting for comfort and support, so I've found myself depressed fairly often. However, getting to share this album during this time has definitely been my saving grace! Cannot wait to jump on a stage again!

When concerts are no longer on pause, if you could tour with any of your favorite bands, who would they be?

Dashboard Confessional, Saves the Day, Spanish Love Songs and us is my current dream tour!

Lastly, the big question, what is one thing as a band you would like to accomplish?

We just want to keep making records we believe in and share them with as many people as possible!

We want to give a huge thank you to Trevor Hedges and Sundressed as a whole for giving us their time and answering our questions! "Home Remedy" is available to stream wherever you listen to music.

You can keep up with the band by following them on Twitter, @SundressedBand. Make sure to tweet us @lgndsoftmrw and let us know who you want to see us do an interview with next!
