Aidan Bissett released his debut single “Different” back in the summer of 2020, and between gaining a following of hundreds of thousands of people on TikTok and scoring a deal with Capitol Records, the past year has propelled the Florida-based musician’s career to new heights. Bissett recently released his label debut, titled “Communication,” just in time for the summer.
Right when the song first begins, the clean guitars, the shimmery sounds that the effects deliver, and the reverbed vocals they accompany immediately bring a brighter tone to it that makes it a very pleasant listen. The first chorus comes in pretty early on, around the thirty-second mark, and it contains irresistible hooks that will replay over and over in the listener’s head.
The bridge is where his vocals really come to the forefront, as that performance seems to be a bit more prominent in the mix, and the same can be said about the final choruses that conclude the song.
We also got the chance to talk to him about what makes tracks like this one “songs of the summer” and how promoting his music on TikTok last year kickstarted his career.
ML: You currently have a following of over 100,000 people on TikTok. How would you say that the platform has impacted your career as an artist?
AB: Without TikTok, I genuinely don’t know where I would be. When I first started, Blu DeTiger’s song “Figure It Out” was blowing up, and I had like 25,000 followers at the time, but somehow, my video ended up on her "For You" page.
That’s one of those “one-in-a-million” things. On top of liking it, she reached out and we started talking about things.
She was way bigger than I was, so when she reached out, I was like “Okay, I’ve got to figure something out here. I’ve got to do something.” She introduced me to a bunch of producers who helped me early on in the journey of music.
Without TikTok, I genuinely don’t think I would be in the position I am in now. It’s helped me market, promote, and meet a bunch of new people, so I do believe it’s a really important piece of social media right now.
ML: You’ve said that your latest single “Communication” is a “song of the summer.” In your opinion, what musical elements do you think make up a song that’s meant for this particular season?
AB: I love summer songs. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good “sad boy” song, but summer songs always have bright guitars or play memories in my head of great stuff that would go on, like going to beaches or traveling or something like that.
The feeling where it transports me away from whatever I’m doing at the time and transports me back to those summer memories… it feels really good, so capturing that in a song is something I always love to do. Things I look out for when I’m trying to create a summer song… I like guitars in my summer songs.
I feel like when we go into fall and winter we can get deeper into synths and stuff because they aren’t really warm. I tend to set it around 160 BPM, which I think is great for summer songs.
I throw in a lot of guitars, put a lot of shimmery effects onto them, and then some bouncy bass lines, which I absolutely love, because without a bass, it can’t bounce. I feel like bass is the most underrated instrument, so I just really try to accentuate that stuff in any of the summer songs that I do.
