When most people think of alternative music, they think of Chicago. The windy city has given birth to countless successful bands although many would argue that the true birthplace of everything from pop-punk to post-hardcore was the state of New Jersey. From My Chemical Romance to Man Overboard, it’s clear that the east coast state has put out some great artists. It’s only natural to add Highwind, a pop-rock two-piece, to the list. The pair are from Asbury Park and are quickly capturing many hearts on social media. I’m proud to say that I’m one of these people.
From the first listen, “2023” is easily a song that makes you want to get out of your bed and out to a show. The slow yet hard hitting instrumentals would inspire anyone remotely familiar with general admission concerts to open up a mosh pit. Chris Russo Jr.’s (vocals, guitar) voice is instantly familiar but in the best possible way. Unlike traditional voices in the genre, Russo’s voice doesn’t have the nasally whine as some other artists. The track features an interesting yet almost slow drumbeat paired with a slightly faster guitar riff that almost insists that the listener replays the track. As so many stylistically different elements are going on simultaneously, it’s imperative to give it a second listen to soak in all the beauty in the production. Highwind has a lot of things that they want to get across with their music, with one of their core messages being to stay true to who you are. “It is okay to be open and honest with yourself and others.” Dan Synn (vocals, bassist, producer) insists, affirming their positive message. With a sound that’s essentially boils down to a cross between Citizen and early Brand New, I expect nothing but success from the New Jersey based duo. “2023” is arguably the best self-released single that’s come out this year. The somber track deserves a place on your autumn playlist. Make sure you check out Highwind later this month!
